LAND FRAGMENTATION AND ITS EFFECT ON PRODUCTIVITY OF COWPEA IN DADIN KOWA IRRIGATION SCHEME, GOMBE AND BORNO STATES, NIGERIA
Authors: AYOOLA, J. B., THERESA ADOGA, OREFI ABU G.A. ABU
Abstracts: This study analyzed the prevalence of land fragmentation and its effect on productivity of cowpea in Dadin Kowa Irrigation Scheme, Nigeria. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 236 respondents for the study. Data for the study were obtained from primary source with the aid of a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics; frequency table, Simpson index, partial factor productivity ratio and regression analysis. The study revealed that land acquisition was predominantly through inheritance (82.6%) and rent (55.1%). Majority (82.6%) of the respondents owned land and out of this, 39.8% could sell their land, 41.9% could lease land out, while 39.4% could transfer land to other users. The mean number of plots owned by the respondents was three (3) and land fragmentation index of 0.5 was obtained from the results, indicating prevalence of land fragmentation. The positive and significant coefficients for number of plots (2.89) implied that number of plots cultivated would significantly increase productivity of cowpea. On the other hand, negative and significant coefficients for distance from plot to road (-0.01) implied that distance from plot to road would significantly reduce productivity of the cowpea. Cooperative farming, agricultural reforms, land consolidation, population control and voluntary land exchange were the farmers' perceived mechanisms for managing land fragmentation in the study area. It was concluded that land in the study area was fragmented (Simpson Index was 0.59) due to population pressure linked with inheritance tenure system and the complex processes of acquiring land title. Distance between plots had significant effect on cowpea productivity as it is linked with transportation cost and time taken to get to the farm plot. It was recommended that procedures for acquiring land title be made simple and easy to enhance fast transaction of land titles.

MODELING SOCIO-ECONOMIC VARIABLES AND HOUSEHOLD INCOME DIVERSIFICATION AMONG FISHER FOLKS ALONG RIVERS NIGER AND BENUE IN KOGI STATE, NIGERIA.
Authors: AWOLUMATE, S., FREGENE, B. T.
Abstracts: Nigerian households along the Niger and Benue rivers depend heavily on the fishery industry for their livelihoods. Despite confronting challenges and actively diversifying their income sources, there is a knowledge gap regarding the effect of household demographics on income diversification. This study, examined income diversification patterns among riverine fishermen and identified key influencing factors. Three-stage sampling was used to select 235 respondents, and a validated, structured questionnaire was employed to collect primary data. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the Tobit Regression Model. The findings revealed that demographic factors had a significant impact on income diversification decisions in households (p < 0.05). Age (0.00247), education (0.00607), distance to the nearest city (0.00189), non-farm income (0.00143), and marital status (0.05552) showed a significant correlation with income diversification, indicating a positive association with the likelihood of households engaging in income diversification. However, household size, fishing experience, and gender did not demonstrate significant effects on income diversification. The findings provide policymakers and development practitioners with vital insights for designing interventions that improve the livelihoods of fishing communities.

DETERMINANTS OF USE OF INSECTICIDE TREATED NETS AMONG HOUSEHOLDS IN IKONO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA
Authors: GODWIN I. OKORO, NELSON U. OKORIE UNYIME R. ETUK
Abstracts: The high incidence and the need to reduce the rate of malaria prevalence in Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State necessitated the study. The study assessed the determinants of use of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) among households in the area. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 360 respondents for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Findings show that the mean age of the respondents was 45.72, with females accounting for 56.67%. Mean household size was 6, while livelihood activity of majority of the respondents (67.22%) was farming. Ownership/access to ITNs was high, with 79.44% having access to the nets. Majority of the respondents (73.06%) had high perception of the benefits of use of the ITNs, while 59.72% have favourable attitudinal disposition to use of the nets. Many respondents (77.94%) were severely challenged on the use of the nets, and actual use of the nets was low, with only 36.67% of the respondents adjudged high users. Significant determinants of use of the nets at 95% confidence interval were ownership/access to the ITNs (t = 2.156), attitude to use of the nets (t = 2.341) and challenges to use of the nets (t = -2.258). Household size (t = -1.853) and perceived benefits of using the nets (t = 1.810) were significant at 90% confidence interval. R2 was 0.701, indicating that the independent variables explain 70.10% of use of the ITNs. It is, therefore, recommended that members of the households should develop more favourable attitude towards use of the ITNs. Government and Non-governmental organisations should distribute more nets to increase ownership and make the nets more accessible to the people. Development agencies should also work to reduce the constraints faced by the respondents on the use of the nets. Moreover, efforts should be made by Non-governmental Organisations to educate the people on the benefits of use of the nets.

ASYMMETRIC EFFECT OF WORLD OIL PRICE ON AGRICULTURAL GROWTH IN NIGERIA: A NON LINEAR ARDL ANALYSIS (1970-2020)
Authors: MARTHA G. UGWUH, GOODNESS C. AYE, GODWIN A. ABU
Abstracts: The paper examines the asymmetric effect of the world price on agricultural growth in Nigeria using time series data from 1970 to 2020. Nonlinear Autoregressive distributive lag frame work was used to analyze both the asymmetric short run and long run effect. Agricultural growth was measured as the growth of agriculture value added ( % of GDP), the prices of real West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil was measured in US dollars, and Exchange rate (official exchange rate) valued in naira per US Dollar (period average) was converted and measured in percentage. The findings showed that Bounds cointegration test based on nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model showed that oil price and agricultural growth have long run (cointegrating) relationship (F=3.876). In the long run the effect of oil price on agricultural growth (1.038) is significant. The results, also, indicated that positive (increasing) oil price has significant short run effect on agricultural growth at its first lag (0.518) and second lag (-0.346). Conversely, negative (decreasing) oil price has significant short run effect on agricultural growth at its first lag (0.334). The Wald test of asymmetry shows that the effect of the world oil price on agricultural growth is asymmetric and statistically significant in the long (P=0.000) and short run (P=0.000), implying that the effect of a positive change in oil price on agricultural growth is different from the effect of a negative change in oil price in both long and short run. . It is, therefore, recommended that government reforms to cushion the adverse effect of oil price shocks on the economy should be strengthened.

ASSESSMENT OF SOCIO- ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF RICE VALUE CHAIN ACTORS IN BENUE AND NASARAWA STATES, NIGERIA
Authors: AVEUYA, A.A., UNONGO, E.A. WEYE, E.A.
Abstracts: The study was carried out to assess the socio-economic characteristics of rice value chain actors in Benue State and Nasarawa States, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all rice value chain actors in the two states. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 320 respondents from the two states using multi-stage sampling procedure. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency and percentage, respectively. The highest (52.7%) respondents pooled for both states (Benue and Nasarawa States) fall within the age brackets of 21-40 years and 41-60 years. Majority (78.9%) and 67.8%) of rice value chain actors were married. Most of the respondents have post-secondary school education (87.5%) from Benue state and (65.5%) from Nasarawa State respectively. Majority of the respondents (97.1%) have less than 10 years of experience in rice value chain activities. Majority have farm size of 1.1ha (97.1%) while majority of the rice value chain actors have household size of (61.1%) <5 with estimated pooled annual income of <₦100,000.00 per annum with pooled value of 82.9%. Most were engaged in trading and business in the two states (54.3%) respectively. The study therefore concluded based on the findings, that majority of the rice value chain actors for the two states are people of active age bracket of 21-40 years of age and have attained postsecondary educational status with low income earning from rice value chain activities. It was recommended that: government should avail rice value actors with more sources of credit to compliment their meager income for smooth operation; more skilled labour should be used rather than using unskilled labour to enhance rice value chain performance. The socio economic characteristics were found to have negative effects on the rice value chain actors in the study area and therefore, need to be improved upon holistically by government to step up rice value chain activities among the rice value chain actors.
